In view of the implementation of Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand, the rules are now being finalized rapidly regarding the provisions included in it. It has been provided in the code that for marriage and divorce, the Municipal Commissioner and Executive Officer will be able to register at the Municipal Corporation, Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat level.
The proposal related to its rules has been approved by Finance and Urban Development Minister Premchand Aggarwal. This system will come into force when the Uniform Civil Code is implemented. Till now the registration of marriage and divorce is done through the Deputy Registrar.
What happened when?
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had promised to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the state during the 2022 assembly elections. After the formation of the government again, the Chief Minister did not delay in forming an expert committee to prepare the draft of the code. After receiving the report from the committee, the Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code Bill was passed by the Assembly. It has got the approval of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Along with this, the government constituted an expert committee to prepare a draft of the rules in view of the provisions mentioned in the Uniform Civil Code Act. In this sequence, approval is being taken on the proposals related to the rules. Cabinet Minister Premchand Agarwal has also approved the proposal related to marriage and divorce in this episode. He said that after the implementation of Uniform Civil Code, the registration of marriage and divorce in urban local bodies will be done by the competent officer. The competent officer will discharge the responsibility of the sub-registrar. He said that this is being done to bring ease in work and speed up registration. The process of registration of marriage and divorce will be online and will be done through the Uniform Civil Code portal. No additional salary allowance will be payable to the competent officer for this work. He told that the data related to this will be stored in the bodies as centralized data.
