In view of the increasing number of tourists and pilgrims in Uttarakhand, which is important from the point of view of tourism and pilgrimage, the government is now laying special emphasis on developing parking facilities for vehicles to deal with the problem of traffic jams on the roads. In this sequence, parking spaces are being built at 183 places in the state through various development authorities, in which more than 15 thousand vehicles can be parked. For the first time, tunnel parking is also being prepared at nine places in the hilly region in the state.
Challenges due to traffic jam problem in tourist places
Along with the upgradation of All Weather Road, Expressway and State Highway to National Highway in the state, road connectivity has been strengthened through PMGSY. This has provided convenience to tourists and pilgrims. Along with Chardham, the crowd that gathers during the tourist season is an example of this. Along with this, the problem of traffic jam in major pilgrimage places, cities and tourist places has increased the challenges. To overcome this, various development authorities are developing parking facilities of 15857 vehicles capacity at 183 sites through Uttarakhand Housing and Urban Development Authority.
Parking facility for 2102 vehicles available at 34 sites
At present, parking facility for 2102 vehicles has been provided at 34 sites. Construction work of 47 parking sites has started, while action is going on at various levels in the remaining. Parking facility for two thousand vehicles is being developed in Rishikesh and Dehradun only. According to Dr. R Meenakshi Sundaram, Chief Administrator of Uttarakhand Housing and Urban Development Authority, in view of the land crisis for ground floor and multi-storey parking in the hilly area, the option of tunnel parking is being tried for the first time. Work is going on on 10 tunnel parking at nine sites.
