New update on Uniform Civil Code, new condition for married couples to get the benefit of government schemes

Marriage registration will be mandatory to avail the benefits of government schemes in the state. This system will be implemented for new or future marriages as well as for earlier marriages i.e. old married people. There is a preparation to include this provision in the rules of Uniform Civil Code. To encourage the registration of marriage, this system is being linked to government schemes. Chief Secretary Radha Raturi and Shatrughan Singh, member of the committee related to Uniform Civil Code, have directed the departments to prepare proposals to link marriage registration with their schemes.

Preparation to implement before November 9
The state government is preparing to implement the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand before the upcoming State Foundation Day anniversary i.e. November 9. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has made his intention clear in this regard. Now the rules are being finalized for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code Act. Under the Uniform Civil Code, emphasis has been laid on registration of live-in relationships along with marriage in the state. In the rules being prepared for the code, deliberations are being done on making marriage registration mandatory.

Review meeting of various departments
A review meeting of various departments was held in Bijapur Guest House under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Radha Raturi and Shatrughan Singh, a member of the committee preparing rules for Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code. In the meeting, discussions were held on taking help of Home, Police, Health, Excise, Minority Welfare, Culture, Food and Civil Supply, Energy, Planning, Finance departments in making rules. There was a discussion on making marriage registration mandatory to avail the benefits of their welfare schemes. The Health Department is providing free LPG, salt and other materials at cheap rates for poor families along with Ayushman, Food Department Garib Anna Yojana.

Registration of new and old marriages is necessary
Similarly, the Planning Department is also providing family identity card, Energy Department is providing discount in billing and subsidy in solar energy schemes. Now, registration of new and old marriages will be necessary to avail the benefits of departmental schemes. In this regard, the departments have been directed to provide proposals for amendments in their rules. Members of the committee related to the rules of the Uniform Civil Code Manu Gaur, Surekha Dangwal, Director General of Police Abhinav Kumar, Special Chief Secretary Amit Sinha, Principal Secretary RK Sudhanshu and officers from various departments were present in the meeting.
