The entire month from the last week of December to January is considered good in terms of tourism business in the state. Last December 2022, according to CMIE, the unemployment rate in the survey was recorded at 4.2 percent. This survey is updated by the 25th of every month. In this case, the last week of the month is included in the next month’s survey.
This is the reason that due to tourists coming to the state to celebrate Christmas and New Year, the effect of boom in business is being seen in the figures of January. During this, a large number of tourists reached the major tourist places including Mussoorie, Nainital, New Tehri, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Lansdowne and many other places. After this, tourism business was also good due to snowfall in high Himalayan areas like Munsiyari, Bageshwar.
Things improved in January after Kovid: Uttarakhand’s tourism industry boomed after the effect of Kovid subsided. In the year 2020, the unemployment rate reached 5.5 percent in January, which seems to be decreasing continuously in the last three years. Last year more than 42 lakh pilgrims performed Char Dham Yatra. Apart from this, a large number of tourists also reached tourist places. As a result of which local businesses sprung up, the unemployment rate in the state also decreased.
UOU MBPG Regional Director and Professor Dr. Sanjay Khatri said that tourism business is expanding due to the development of major destinations. Apart from this, Make in India program should also be implemented in the new education policy, so that students can be made entrepreneurs. Motivating the youth to set up their own employment or enterprise will result in very positive results in the field of employment.
Digvijay Bisht, president of the Nainital Hotel and Restaurant Association, said that business was good at the beginning of the new year due to the arrival of tourists, which benefited hoteliers, taxi, boat and other businessmen. However, if it had snowed, the situation would have been better. After the normalization of the situation of Kovid, now the tourism business is improving a lot. Further improvement is expected.
Only four states of the country are in better condition than Uttarakhand:
Uttarakhand has the lowest unemployment rate among all except four states. According to CMI, Chhattisgarh has 0.5, Orissa 1.5, Tamil Nadu 1.8 and Madhya Pradesh 1.9 percent unemployment rate. Talking about the states with high unemployment rate, Delhi 16.7, Assam 16.1, Bihar 11.9, Goa 16.2, Haryana 21.7, Himachal Pradesh 10, Jammu and Kashmir 21.8, Jharkhand 13.8, Rajasthan 21.1 and Tripura 16 percent.
