In the homestay scheme run by the Tourism Development Board to provide employment to the local people and better accommodation facilities to the tourists at reasonable prices, 3,813 homestay operators did not follow the standards implemented by the department. The application of homestays not following the standards was cancelled. Actually, in the year 2016, the Tourism Department had started a scheme to provide employment to people by operating homestays under subsidy. For this, one has to apply online on the website of the Tourism Department. Conditions and standards have been kept by the department for the application, which are mandatory.
After this, the District Tourism Development Officer verifies the homestay of the applicant. If the standards are met, the homestay is registered. Currently, 7,663 homestays are operating in 13 districts of the state. Homestays with better arrangements are placed in A, B and C category and later they also get a certificate from the department.
Most homestay applications have been cancelled due to the absence of the building owner. Apart from this, many homestay applications have also been cancelled due to the building being in the name of another person.
