Major Dam / Water Power Projects of Uttarakhand

Glogy Water Fund Project

  •  Glogi Water Power Project is located at Bhatta Falls in Mussoorie
  •  It has a capacity of 1000 MW
  •  Glogee hydroelectric project is the first hydroelectric power project in Uttarakhand. It has been generating power since 1909.


Tehri Project

  •  Tehri Water Power Project is located in Tehri at the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Bhilangana rivers.
  •  Presently, Tehri Dam is the highest dam in Asia, which is 260.5 meters high, due to its vastness it has been called the village of the nation
  • The total installed capacity of Tehri dam is 2400 MW
  • The total water holding capacity of Tehri Dam is 354 million cubic meters and its reservoir is spread over 42 sq km, which is known as Swami Ramitirtha Sagar
  •  The Tehri project was approved by the Planning Commission in 1972 and its construction was started by the Irrigation Department in 1978, due to slowing down of work, the Tehri Water Dam Corporation was formed and given the responsibility of its construction in 1988.

  •  The people of Tehri also opposed Tehri Dam due to the displacement; In 1978, the Anti-Terrorist Committee was constituted in Tehri for protesting the dam.

Vishnu Prayag Water Power Project

  •  Vishnu Prayag Water Power Project is located on the Alaknanda River in Chamoli district
  •  Its total capacity is 650 MWDhauliganga Project Dhauliganga project is located on Dhauliganga river in Dharchula of Pithoragarh district
  •  Its total capacity is 280 MW, which started in 2005
  • The cut-off technique is used in this project.

Pancheshwar Dam Project

  • Pancheshwar Dam Project is a water-based project to be built in Champawat district of Uttarakhand.

Apart from these, some other hydroelectric projects of Uttarakhand, river, capacity, and status related to them are as follows.

  • Maneri Bhali project – Bhagirathi, 90 MW, Uttarkashi
  •  Srinagar hydroelectric project – Alaknanda, 330 MW, Srinagar
  •  Stone Project – Ganga Canal, 20 MW, Haridwar
  • Khatima project – Sharada, 41 MW, Udham Singh Nagar
  • Chibbero Project – Tons, 240 MW, Dehradun
  •  Ramganga Project – Ramganga, 198 MW, Pauri
  • Tonkpur project – Sharada, 120 MW, Champawat
