Levondios Kostriks, Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Cyprus, said that this strain was created by the fusion of Delta and Omicron. Kostrix is ​​also the head of the Biotechnology Molecular Virology Center in Cyprus.
He said that the Omicron and Delta variants are currently the most dominant variants in the world and this new variant is taking shape as a result of a mixed transition between the two. It is named Deltacron. It has evolved from the addition of a variant with an Omicron-like genetic trait to the delta genome. Kostrix and his team have identified 25 such cases so far.
The team has also found that people hospitalized due to Kovid-19 infection are more likely to have this infection than patients who are not hospitalized. These 25 cases have been sent to international database for further study. So that it can be found out how infectious or lethal this variant can be. There has been no response from the World Health Organization regarding this variant yet.
Kostrix says that we will see later whether this variant is more sick or remains more contagious. How much impact it shows against Delta and Omicron remains to be seen. He said, it is my personal opinion that this strain will also lag behind the highly contagious Omicron variant of Corona.
