Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, had a deep affection for Gurukul Kangri of Haridwar and its founder Swami Shraddhanand. He first came to Gurukul on 6 April 1915 and discussed national education with Swami Shraddhanand. The Brahmacharis of Gurukul also sent a Shram Donation of 1500 rupees to South Africa to assist the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi.

Swami Shraddhanand, the founder of Gurukul Kangri, conferred the Mahatma Gandhi with the title of Mahatma for the first time. In 1915, when the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi was agitating against apartheid in South Africa, the Brahmacharis of Gurukul collected money by doing shramdaan in the construction of a dam of Kumbh held in Haridwar.
This money was sent by Swami Shraddhanand to South Africa to assist the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Impressed by this, the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi came to Haridwar on 5 April 1915. Swami Shraddhanand and Gurukul employees received a grand welcome when they reached Gurukul Kangri in Niladhara on April 6.
Gandhi sang Gurukul again in 1916:
After this, there was a deep connection between Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Shraddhanand. After that Mahatma Gandhi again came to Gurukul in March 1916 and discussed many national issues with Swami Shraddhanand.

10 years later, in March 1926, Mahatma Gandhi arrived as the chief guest at the silver jubilee celebrations of Gurukul Kangri University. Mahatma Gandhi and the founder of Gurukul Kangri Swami Shraddhanand also discussed correspondence on national issues. Many of his letters are still preserved in the Gurukul Kangri University Museum.

Swami Shraddhanand, the founder of the Gurukul, addressed the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi as Mahatma for the first time. After this, Mohan Das Karmchand Gandhi was also duly decorated with the title of Mahatma.
