Electricity rates may increase in Uttarakhand from April 1.

Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) has prepared a proposal to increase electricity rates. After passing it in the board meeting, it will be sent to the Uttarakhand Electricity Regulatory Commission. After getting the green signal from the regulatory commission, the new electricity rates will come into effect from April 1.

Every year UPCL has to fix electricity rates according to all expenses and losses. The proposal for these rates is sent to the Regulatory Commission. After public hearing, final rates are decided by the Regulatory Commission. This time the proposal could not be sent till December 31, scheduled by UPCL.

UPCL has asked the Commission till January 15. According to official sources, UPCL has prepared a new tariff of electricity rates. Under this, a proposal of two to four percent per unit for general consumers and four to six percent per unit for industrial units has been prepared.

Now this proposal will be brought to the board meeting. After being approved by the board, it will be sent to the regulatory commission. According to Director Human Resources AK Singh, the proposal is to be sent to the regulatory commission by 15 January.

Commission can cut UPCL’s proposal
He can cut the proposal coming to the commission. It can also be cut by 50 percent or more. If the commission cuts 50 percent, there will be an increase of one percent per unit for general consumers and two percent per unit for industrial units.

Surcharge on those taking electricity from external sources
UPCL has sent a proposal of Rs 1.16 per unit surcharge to consumers seeking electricity from external sources. If the regulatory commission approves this, then such consumers will also have to pay a surcharge of Rs 1.16 per unit between April 1, 2021 and September 30, 2021. Currently, consumers can send their suggestions to the regulatory commission on this. The commission will then take a decision on it.
