Former Chief Minister Harish Rawat, who returned to Dehradun on Tuesday after attending the Congress Working Committee meeting in Hyderabad, said that the Central Government’s move to bring the Women’s Reservation Bill is welcome. Party’s state spokesperson Garima Mehra Dasauni said that this initiative was taken by late Rajiv Gandhi to give a leading position to half the population in politics. Garima said that Rajiv Gandhi had introduced the Constitution Amendment Bill in the year 1989 for one-third reservation for women in Panchayats and municipal bodies. This bill was passed in the Lok Sabha, but could not be passed in the Rajya Sabha. He said that Congress understands the meaningful participation and shared responsibility of women.
